I took my oldest daughter to see the new WK movie, Dog Days. She’s read a couple of the books, but didn’t really get into them. We had a good time, though. I laughed along with her at the grody jokes and Greg’s often not so bright antics, and we just enjoyed the movie for what it is. She told me she gives it “three stars.”

The hero of the movies, Greg Heffley, really is a wimpy kid. He’s not a bad kid, but he’s not a great person. Here we are in the third movie, and he’s still not a good friend. He still uses his best friend Rowely and gets him into trouble. The movie has some great comedy for school-age kids who love those embarrassing moments and find potty humor hilarious. But it’s not a movie where you can look at the main character and talk with your child about how Greg learned his lesson and changed as a person, because that whole arc doesn’t happen to any great extent. Even though Greg hasn’t changed much, though, the movies offer a great opportunity to talk with your child about what it means to have character and integrity and why that’s important.
