I signed up for paperless billing statements from one of my credit card issuers once, but I had to turn it off because I kept forgetting to pay the bill. I’m one of those people who needs the physical bill as a reminder.

Paperless statements cut down the time you spend opening, sorting through, and discarding mail, but you’d in turn spend that time checking your email, logging on to your credit card issuer’s website, then pulling up your statement.

There are both pros and cons to paperless billing statements. What do you think? Are paperless statements better than traditional credit card statements?

Thought I would share an interesting piece from Forbes.com, Rethinking Some Elements of Conventional Retirement Wisdom. I agree with these “unconventional” ideas.

Macy’s is now selling the Martha Stewart “Coral Sea Melamine Collection” outdoor dining group at 50% off the regular price. Originally priced from $25 to $47, this group can now be purchased from $12.50 to $23.50. For example, the set of four Coral Sea White Melamine Salad Plates were originally $29 and are now priced at just $14.50.

I got my first credit card – a Verizon Visa with a $1,000 credit limit – when I was only 18 and still a couple of weeks away from graduating high school. The card issuer called me, took my application over the phone, and let me know I was approved within minutes.

It’s not as easy for young adults to get a credit card these days. Credit card issuers are no longer allowed to solicit card applications from young adults – meaning they can’t simply call you on the phone and ask if you’d like their credit card.

Also, if you’re under 21, you must have your own source of income or you have to get a co-signer for your credit card. It’s for your own good. Having an income ensures you can pay back whatever credit card balance you charge.

Need a new car, but not sure how to meet your monthly car note? You could always do what Doreen Christensen has done. She bought a new Lexus ES 350 last September and has been paying back her monthly car loan by using the money she has saved by using coupons.

Christensen told the Sun Sentinel that she is not only up to date on her current payments, but she is also paid up through December.

“When friends laugh at my super-saving ways and say it’s not worth the time it takes to clip and save,” Christensen said, “I ask them what car they drive.”
