This Father’s Day, Turner Classic Movies offers up a variety of great films that will surely please fathers of all ages.
The day starts bright and early with Bonjour Tristesse (1957), a romantic melodrama directed by Otto Preminger and starring Jean Seberg as a freethinking teenager who tries to sabotage the engagement between her playboy father (David Niven) and his future bride (Deborah Kerr).
For those who rise at a more reasonable time, TCM will air two classics directed by Vincente Minelli, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father (1963) starring Glenn Ford and Shirley Jones, and Father of the Bride (1950) featuring Spencer Tracy and a young Elizabeth Taylor.
In late morning, be sure to catch Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane (1941), which will be followed by a pair of political-themed films, All the King’s Men (1949), starring Oscar winner Broderick Crawford as a populist politician who falls prey to corruption, and John Ford’s The Last Hurrah (1958), featuring Spencer Tracy as a political boss facing societal change as he runs for re-election.
Following Smokey and the Bandit (1977) with Burt Reynolds and Sally Field, Turner will air one of the great all-time classics, To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), starring Gregory Peck in his iconic role as Atticus Finch. Up next will be Life With Father (1947), Michael Curtiz’s domestic comedy about a benevolent father (William Powell) trying to become master of his domain despite the family’s domineering mother (Irene Dunne) ruling the roost.
After a midnight showing of Charlie Chaplin’s silent classic, The Kid (1921), night owls can watch the little-known Iranian docudrama, Close-Up (1990), directed by Abbas Kiarostami, and the great courtroom drama, 12 Angry Men (1957), directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Henry Fonda, Jack Klugman, and Ed Begley.
David Niven and Deborah Kerr in ‘Bonjour Tristesse’ (1957)/Sony Pictures; Elizabeth Taylor and Spencer Tracy in ‘Father of the Bride’ (1950)/Warner Bros.; and Gregory Peck and Mary Badham in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ (1962)/Universal Pictures
