James Dean Films to Make Blu-ray Debut

James Dean Box SetAt long last, all three films made starring 1950s icon James Dean will finally be released on Blu-ray in the James Dean Ultimate Collector’s Edition box set.

Distributed by Warner Home Video, the set will contain Dean’s auspicious starring debut in East of Eden (1955), directed by Elia Kazan. The film was an adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel and featured Dean as a miscreant youth seeking acceptance from his lettuce farmer father (Raymond Massey) and his so-called good brother (Richard Davalos). It was the only film released in Dean’s lifetime.

Also in the set is Dean’s most recognized film, Rebel Without a Cause (1955), where he delivered a legendary performance as Jim Stark, a troubled youth battling the loneliness, isolation, and frustration of growing up in post-war America. Released barely a month after his tragic death in 1955, Rebel Without a Cause was a landmark film that defined a generation of disillusioned teenagers.

His final film, Giant (1956), featured Dean as a Jett Rink, a laconic ranch hand who competes with a wealthy Texas ranch owner (Rock Hudson) for the love of a beautiful socialite (Elizabeth Taylor). Once again portraying a disenfranchised loner, Dean’s stellar performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, making him the first actor to receive such an honor posthumously.

Warner Bros. seems to have put great care into the release of this box set by adding a number of choice extras, including several behind-the-scenes documentaries, wardrobe and screen tests, deleted scenes, interviews with key players, footage from the premiere of East of Eden, and theatrical trailers.

The box set will street on Nov. 5, 2013.
