Ballmer and Windows Phone 8 Hardware

Steve Ballmer to Step Down as CEO of Microsoft

Ballmer and Windows Phone 8 HardwareMicrosoft has built an empire around software but is seeking to transition to other areas. This is one reason Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer cited in his recent decision to step down within the next year.

A Look at Microsoft’s Business Goals for the 2013-2014 Fiscal Year

According to Ballmer, who will most likely retire, “There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time. We have embarked on a new strategy with a new organization and we have an amazing Senior Leadership Team. My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our company’s transformation to a devices and services company. We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction.”

This came as part of the official announcement posted by Microsoft last week.

Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet interviewed Ballmer this past week, which included questions about his biggest accomplishment and regret. I also found an article exploring Ballmer’s mixed results at the helm of Microsoft by Don Clark and Shira Ovide of the Wall Street Journal insightful. Both of these articles offer links to candidates for Ballmer’s successor.

Changes on this scale may be delayed in coming but will certainly affect Office and the many other areas of Microsoft’s business.

Microsoft Surface Side View

Microsoft Surface Pro Tablets $100 USD Less in August

Microsoft Surface Side ViewMicrosoft Slashed Surface RT Tablets by $150 USD recently. Now, the Microsoft Surface Pro is discounted by $100 USD in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States.

As reported to Tom Warren of The Verge, the deal is valid through most of the month, from August 4, 2013 to August 29, 2013.

From a software standpoint, the Surface Pro has a key advantage: it allows you to run a full version of Microsoft Office, whereas Surface RT tablets require the use of Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 RT.

If you’ve been Awaiting a Microsoft Office version for Android, you’ll want to check out a version just released by Microsoft known as Microsoft Office Mobile for Android.

Last month, Microsoft Released Office Mobile for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and iPad Mini.

Microsoft may very well release another product for Android in 2014, but for now this may be your best Android solution if you love Office. Check out these other solutions as well: Office Software Suites and Apps for Android.

Microsoft Office 2003 Loses Support Next Spring – April 2014

You may still be using Microsoft Office 2003, which Microsoft has announced will lose support next spring, April 2014.

While you may still use your installation of Office 2003 after this date, you will do so without support. Here’s why I do not advise this, and some options you may not have thought about, as far as upgrading from Office 2003: Upgrade Options for Microsoft Office 2003 Users.

Incidentally, Windows XP will also be retired April 2014.

Microsoft Bob, or Worse–Clippy!–May Live On

Clippy Office AssistantOffice.About.com Nerdsday Your Inner Office Software Nerd Validated Every Thursday About.Software.com Pinterest ButtonOffice.About.com Twitter ButtonOffice.About.com Facebook ButtonOffice.About.com Google Plus ButtonOffice.About.com RSS Button

At a recent Microsoft Research event, Bill Gates foretold the reincarnation of Microsoft Bob, the potentially helpful Office Assistant for Microsoft Office programs, according to InfoWorld.

I personally wasn’t a fan of any of the Office Assistants, including Clippy, Merlin the Wizard, Rover the Dog, Links the Cat, the Dot ball, or Hoverbot. But apparently, Gates suggested that the idea of intuitive, contextual help tips is an important one, and that the likes of Microsoft Bob were just not as developed as they needed to be.

Gates also reaffirmed he will not be rejoining Microsoft in his former capacity, rendering this the stuff of speculation.

Incidentally, the Microsoft Office Ribbon Game lets you vent your feeling for Clippy. Just in case you need it.
