Joy Behar Says Goodbye to ‘The View’

Friday is Joy Behar’s last day on The View. The comedian and co-host will make her exit amid good tidings, highlights from her 16 years on the show and a joke or two (or three).

Save for creator Barbara Walters, Behar’s departure marks the last episode with one of the talk show’s original co-hosts. Behar made her debut with the first episode of The View in August 1997.

Behar told reporters that she wants to do different things and no longer wants to be tied to the regular routine of a daily program.

The outspoken host leaves behind a history of memorable moments, including walking out on TV talk show host and View guest, Bill O’Reilly. She also took to task then presidential nominee John McCain about his approval of election ads and President Barack Obama’s knowledge of pop culture.

Behar also hosted her own talk show, The Joy Behar Show, on HLN for a short time. Behar took time to chat with About Talk Shows when that program was on the air. Check out our interview with the talk show host here!

Readers Choose Favorite Talk Shows, Hosts for 2013

Late night host Craig Ferguson and daytime host Ellen DeGeneres were selected as this year’s favorite late night and daytime hosts by About Talk Shows readers. Their shows, the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and The Ellen DeGeneres Show picked up no-prizes for favorite late night and daytime talk show as well.

More than 260 About Talk Shows readers took part in this year’s 2013 Readers Choice Awards. Readers voted in five categories, including:

  • Favorite Late Night Talk Show
  • Favorite Daytime Talk Show
  • Favorite Late Night Talk Show Host
  • Favorite Daytime Talk Show Host, and
  • Favorite Talk Show Band

This year’s results are a little bit surprising. Not so much which shows and hosts were selected as favorites – but the way they crushed the competition. In all of the categories save favorite band, the winners thoroughly dominated.

Also interesting are the hosts who didn’t dominate. Powerhouse The Colbert Report received only two votes in the Late Night category and zero votes in the Late Night Host division. Similarly, the two daytime doctors – Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil – barely made a peep in both Daytime categories. What’s going on there?

Curious about your favorite talk show? Check out all our results!

Time Extended! Vote in Our Readers’ Poll!

You know, to really make these categories count, we should have votes in the triple digits. Which we just don’t have yet. So if you have a moment or two, please, please (please?) vote in the 2013 Annual About Talk Shows Readers’ Choice Poll.

This year we’ll vote in the same five categories. But this year will crown an overall champion for favorite talk show and talk show host. The late night and daytime winners will battle for ultimate supremacy and the right to brag that About Talk Shows readers love the very bestest.

And we’re extending the time to vote. One more week! Next Friday, June 7, we’re shutting it down, folks. (We’ll counting up the votes then.) Go vote!

  • Favorite Talk Show – Late Night!
  • Favorite Talk Show – Daytime!
  • Favorite Late Night Talk Show Host!
  • Favorite Talk Show Host – Daytime!
  • Favorite Talk Show Band!

Time to Vote for Your Favorite Talk Shows and Hosts!

It’s been more than a year since we came together to vote for our favorite late night and daytime talk shows and our favorite late night and daytime talk show hosts. Now it is time to crown new winners for 2013.

Last year, readers selected Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as their favorite late night talk show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show as the best daytime talk program. Fallon and DeGeneres also picked up nods for favorite late night and daytime hosts. And The Roots came out on top with respect to favorite talk show band.

This year we’ll vote in the same five categories. But this year will crown an overall champion for favorite talk show and talk show host. The late night and daytime winners will battle for ultimate supremacy and the right to brag that About Talk Shows readers love the very bestest.

We’ll begin with Favorite Talk Show – Late Night. From now until midnight EST on May 29, you can have your vote count. After midnight, May 29, you can still vote, but your vote won’t count (sorry, Charlie!). So let the voting begin!

*Editor’s Note: Due to tool constraints, each poll will include no more than 10 choices

Sexologist Sylvia Hacker, October 19, 1922 – January 13, 2013

Thanks to Carol Queen for sharing with me the news of the passing of Sylvia Hacker. I didn’t know Sylvia, but while reading a bit about her life and work realized that I own one of her books, What Every Teenager Really Wants to Know About Sex, which she wrote with her daughter in 1993.

Sylvia got her bachelor of science degree from Brooklyn College in 1922 and her PhD from the University of Michigan in 1975, her dissertation research addressed what for her was the question that started her interest in studying human sexuality; with so many options for birth control why aren’t people using it?

According to her obituary she was outspoken advocate for what we’d now call comprehensive sexuality education, arguing that sex educators need to teach as much (if not more) about pleasure than they do about reproduction and STDs. She appeared on talk shows and had her own show called Sexy Minutes.

I’m not sure of its origin, but there is a 20 minute interview with Sylvia on MySpace which was conducted when she was 85. She begins the interview by quoting Woody Allen, “I’m not afraid of death, I just don’t want to be there when it happens.”

DAR.fm Now Openly Publishes Talk Show Listening Stats

Dar.fm (Digital Audio Recorder) is an online radio streaming service which allows users to discover, record, and listen back to popular talk shows. CEO and founder, Michael Robertson recently announced DAR.fm was now publishing statistics for each show. “The stats aren’t hidden or displayed as a percentage of some unknown base, but actual numbers,” he says. (DAR.fm logo, screenshot: DAR.fm)

If you look in the upper left hand corner of every show page you’ll see data covering the last 30 days for “total” and “trending” numbers based on actual activity.

Robertsons says he’s already noticed some trends:
- – Any idea that “talk radio” is just for conservatives is wrong. Four out of the top eight shows on DAR.fm are left or progressive hosts.
- – Many of the top 40 shows have a network of radio stations helping them build offline audience. But, look closer and you’ll find some hosts really stand out with only one traditional station promotion them. For instance, Dana Loesch is #18, Larry Elder is #20, and Tony Kornheiser is #28.

To use DAR.fm, just browse over to the website.
