Individuals, families or groups can choose from any number of pursuits while visiting the Grand Canyon. Sandy beaches and shallow ponds for the children, hiking trails of varying levels of difficulty, secret coves with concealed waterfalls and, most stimulating of all, whitewater rafting the Colorado River.
There are many types of watercraft obtainable for exploring the river. Large motorized rafts are accessible through professional outfitters who also provide safety and orientation instructions prior to debarking. These rafts are expressly built for navigating the rapids and hold up to 16 people, two crew members, and a great quantity of supplies, making them the preferred boats on the water. Fast enough to traverse the entire Colorado River in one week; they are the ideal choice for people with limited travel time. Visitors who want to travel the river at a more leisurely speed can opt for more compact craft that are powered by paddle and carry only four or five passengers and a guide. These hand-operated boats take about twelve days to move from one end of the canyon to the other and make running the rapids a bit more exciting than do power boats. A visitor can expect to get soaked almost daily when aboard one of these more compact craft, but for many vacationers, that’s half the fun.
Besides these, catamarans and kayaks are also offered through outfitters, and are often also used by experienced campers on private trips. In relation to these, anyone organizing a river rafting trip on their own must be aware that they require a permit which must be issued and purchased before arrival. These permits are stringently limited in quantity and are allocated through a lottery system at least a year in advance, so one would be well-advised not to set out on a Grand Canyon rafting trip without first obtaining the correct papers.
After having done so, however, anyone whose trip includes white water rafting and hiking in the Grand Canyon will have a summer to remember indefinitely.
