I’m impressed with the recent news of the protest of Canadian scientists against the upcoming passing of Canadian parliamentary Bill C-38, which is being pushed by the Conservative party currently in the majority.
And my two cents, C-38 is destructive plain and simple. So whose pockets are being lined with this one? The Conservatives are arguing that Canada needs to put more money into exploitation (excuse me satirical typo) commercialization and less into science research and the environment.
For example, the Conservatives want to end funding for the Polar Environmental Atmospheric Research Laboratory in Eureka, Nunavut, which has been tracking ozone depletion, air quality and climate change in the High Arctic since 2005. Well I guess what we don’t know won’t kill us…..
The Conservatives want to deeply cut the budgets for Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Library and Archives Canada, the National Research Council Canada, Statistics Canada and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. They want to close the the Experimental Lakes Area, a world-renowned research facility in northwestern Ontario. Get rid of the national science adviser and limit all access to federal scientists.
There’s more. But it is all sickening. I hope my Canadians readers take this all to heart in the next elections. Photo Credit: Photographers Michael & Richard Webster courtesy of www.deathofevidence.ca
