Manchester City’s Super Sunday match-winner David Silva is the club’s greatest ever player, according to Jamie Carragher.
City produced another late show to equal the Premier League record of 13 successive wins in a season with Silva’s strike enough for a 2-1 victory over West Ham.
Pep Guardiola’s men are eight points ahead of Manchester United in the title race, with the pair set to meet on Super Sunday next weekend.
Spain international Silva, 31, last week put pen to paper on a one-year extension to a deal which was due to expire in the summer of 2019.
Since he joined City from Valencia in 2010 for £26m, Silva has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and two League Cups, as well as earning a World Cup-winners’ medal and winning two European Championships with Spain.
Carragher believes we are looking at the best player to have donned the City colours.
Pep Guardiola says he felt confident his Manchester City side would find a victory against West Ham and believes it's vital they maintain their momentum.
“Silva is Manchester City’s greatest ever player,” said Carragher.
“The one disappointment is his age – how long is he going to play? He’s alongside Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Eric Cantona – he’s one of the greatest we’ve ever had in the Premier League.”
Speaking in the Sky Sports studio, former Arsenal striker Henry agreed with Carragher.
He said: “He’s the best creative midfielder we’ve seen in this league. I didn’t see everyone play, but David Silva wants the ball and plays the same way against every team. He puts his foot in and doesn’t shy away from the ball. He’s brave off the ball and on the ball. What a player.”
Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher praised Manchester City for sticking to their style of play, even when under pressure.
Silva’s winning goal against West Ham was provided by another magical pass by Kevin De Bruyne, who has racked up eight assists in his last 13 matches.
The Belgian is the clear favourite to win the PFA Player of the Year award and Carragher thinks he could surpass Silva as City’s greatest in the next few years.
He said: “I didn’t think I’d see anyone better than Silva but the way De Bruyne is playing this season he could surpass him in the next five years.
“We’re seeing two City greats here.”
