Henrik Stenson has pulled out of the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai due to a rib injury, according to Sky sources.
The 2016 Open champion had to miss this week’s Nedbank Challenge, but had been hoping to recover in time for the European Tour’s season-ending event, which gets underway on Thursday.
Stenson wrote on Instagram earlier this week: “I’m disappointed to have to pre-emptively withdraw from the Nedbank Golf Challenge Hosted by Gary Player, I was looking forward to this important year-end event on the European Tour.
“At this point I am back home in Orlando waiting to do a scan on my ribs and get the necessary rest. I am still hoping for a quick recovery and have not ruled out playing in Dubai next week at this point.”
The 41-year-old Swede memorably broke his major duck in the Open at Troon last year, shooting a brilliant final round of 63 to beat Phil Mickelson after a high quality duel.
He has been a member of the European Ryder Cup team on four occasions (two wins) and was the Race to Dubai champion in 2013 and 2016.
