League Two: Luton denied top spot, Notts County held

Luton were denied top spot in Sky Bet League Two after Cheltenham goalkeeper Scott Flinders assisted a stoppage-time equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Whaddon Road.

The Hatters looked to be moving back to the summit following an 84th-minute goal from substitute Elliott Lee, but Robins defender Will Boyle salvaged a point for the hosts in the sixth minute of added time after Flinders flicked on a corner.

Nathan Jones’ visitors opened the scoring through Dan Potts’ early strike before Jamie Grimes claimed Cheltenham’s first leveller with a scrambled finish.

Luton’s late setback meant they dropped to fourth, while Notts County remained top, although they could only manage a 1-1 draw at mid-table Stevenage.

Dan Newton’s seventh league goal of the season put Boro ahead in the first half, but Kevin Nolan’s Magpies grabbed a share of the spoils thanks to Elliott Hewitt’s 58th-minute equaliser.

Exeter climbed to second after first-half goals from forwards Jayden Stockley and Liam McAlinden earned a comfortable 2-0 success over Grimsby, with Accrington third following a goalless draw at Cambridge.

At the other end of the table, bottom club Chesterfield were denied what would have been a third victory of the campaign after conceding an injury-time equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Swindon.

Second-half goals from striker Kristian Dennis and midfielder Jak McCourt had turned the game in the Spireites’ favour following Timi Elsnick’s 47th-minute opener, but Luke Norris’ late penalty denied them all three points.

Struggling Barnet were sitting just four points above Chesterfield after their winless run stretched to 11 games following Sammie Szmodics’ late winner in the 1-0 defeat at home to Colchester.

Morecambe, who began the day second bottom, inflicted a surprise 2-1 defeat on high-flying Wycombe.

The Shrimpers, who had won just two of their previous 15 league fixtures, went ahead through defender Steven Old’s 27th-minute header before Adam McGurk doubled the advantage two minutes before the break.

Chairboys striker Adebayo Akinfenwa halved the deficit with his 10th league goal of the season eight minutes from time but his side were unable to salvage a point.

Elsewhere, Lincoln came from behind to win 4-1 at Crewe following Harry Anderson’s brace and a goal at either end from Michael Raynes.

Raynes gave the hosts an early lead but, after Imps winger Anderson struck twice early in the second half, the Alex defender blotted his copybook by diverting the ball into his own net before Elliott Whitehouse added another.

Carlisle also recorded a thumping win as they beat 10-man Yeovil 4-0 at Brunton Park.

Danny Grainger opened the scoring for the Cumbrians and, after Hallam Hope had doubled the lead, he claimed his second from the penalty spot in the 74th minuted after Glovers defender Bevis Mugabi was sent off for an off-the-ball
incident. Substitute Shaun Miller claimed the Cumbrians’ fourth.

In Saturday’s other games, Alex MacDonald claimed an 84th-minute winner as Mansfield picked up a first victory in six by beating Coventry at the Ricoh Arena, while Thomas Verheydt cancelled out Christian Doidge’s opener to earn a Crawley a 1-1 draw against Forest Green.
