Romelu Lukaku reflects on equalling Belgium's record goals tally after scoring twice against Mexico

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has equalled the all-time Belgium goalscoring record after scoring twice against Mexico in Friday night’s 3-3 draw.

The 24-year-old’s 70th-minute equaliser was his 30th goal for Belgium, and it ensured he equalled the record set by Paul van Himst and Bernard Voorhoof.

Lukaku had previously been struggling for form in front of goal with Manchester United; he had not scored in seven games – his last goal coming for Belgium a month ago in their 4-0 win over Cyprus.

“At my young age to have achieved something great like this is really good,” said Lukaku.

“But there is a lot of work to be done everyday and I’m just relishing the challenges on a weekly basis.”

Belgium’s injury-hit defence were exposed by Mexico’s Hirving Lozano, who scored a quick-fire double in the second-half to put his side in front.

Lukaku was impressed with Saturday’s opponents and believes if they can replicate the form they showed against Belgium, they will pose a threat at the World Cup.

“I knew they were a good team and I knew they had a lot of individual talent,” he added.

“I think they’re a really good team and if they perform like that, they’ll be very dangerous for a lot of teams at the World Cup.”
