New Delhi (Sputnik) — The string of attacks on Indian students in Northern Italy has prompted India to take up the matter with the highest of authorities in Italy. Though it has not been yet established if the attacks were racially motivated, the Consulate General of India in Milan has asked all Indian students to be in touch with each other and immediately report any future attack. In its advisory, the consulate has asked the students not to panic as the matter is being taken up with the highest level of law and order authorities.
Meanwhile, back home in India, Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj has said she is closely monitoring the situation while assuring the students and their families to stay calm.
“Attack on Indian students in Milan: I have got the detailed report. Please do not worry. I am monitoring the situation personally,” Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted.
Indian students have been requested to report such matters directly to the consul general immediately so that all efforts can be made to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
The attacks on Indian students come soon after Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni wrapped up his two-day official visit to New Delhi.
Italian PM Gentiloni had candid talks with Prime Minister Modi and vowed to renew diplomatic ties with India and strengthen economic and investment cooperation.
